The trash man cometh

My hobby of not attending meetings about recycling saves more energy than your hobby of recycling.
John McCarthy-politician

Irony lives. I was reading an article today about Cleveland (Click link)
getting set up to see how often residents are putting out their recycling bens. This is so they can start issuing $100 fines for those who are not separating their recyclables.

In the middle of reading this article, my wife and I watched as a trash truck pulled onto our cul-de-sac.

A couple years ago, the St. Louis County government decided there were trash trucks from too many trash-hauling companies traveling through the county neighborhoods. They said that some blocks had several companies picking up trash (it’s called the free market system). These multiple companies covering the same routes were wasting fuel and causing complaints about damage to the roads and excess noise; however, when asked about the complaints, they could not produce any. It did not matter. The county government contracted with one company to supply trash-hauling service for the whole county and made it mandatory for the residents to use that company. There was also a mandatory recycling-trashcan supplied. We were told it would save us money.

In our case, we were forced to give up a much smaller trash company we were happy with and begin using the county’s large one. Our price went up considerably, but our service was no better.

Now we skip forward to today. We watched as the county-mandated company drove through the subdivision and picked up the trash, first the recyclables, then the regular trash. The regular trash was dumped right on top of the recyclables in the same truck.

I wonder how long it will be before the St. Louis County trash-police start checking to make sure we are properly separating our recyclables—so that their mandatory trash company can mix them back together.
