Stupid is as Stupid Does

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.
Albert Einstein

You have to hand it to those Qatari diplomats; they really know how to tell a joke. When Mohammed al-Modadi came out of the United Airlines Flight 663 bathroom in a puff of smoke and said, “I’m trying to light my shoes on fire,” he was a real riot.

Perhaps humor is a little different in Qatar than in the United States. While Americans might get a chuckle out of cartoon of Mohammad with a bomb in his turban (an act that threatens or harms no one); making fun of attempts to kill hundreds of plane passengers, while they are on the plane . . . that’s a real leg slapper.

There are many definitions on the web for terrorism. Most of them refer to the use of violent acts directed at civilians to instill fear or intimidate. Al-Modadi’s statement, about trying to light his shoes, caused fear. Was it intentional? Was he trying to intimidate? Does it matter?

Al-Modadi should immediately receive a letter from the State Department informing him he is persona non grata (that means get the heck out of this country). It should also contain a one-way ticket to Qatar on a tramp steamer because al-Modadi should be permanently placed on the no-fly list. That could be the Unites States’ little joke to him.
